New initiatives by the European DLM Forum on Model
Requirements for electronic records & content management
John Symon
Senior Vice President Europe
AIIM International
The explosion of an organisation's information content,
fuelled by the internet, is requiring root and branch
re-assessment of its strategy for the management and
control of information assets. The challenges are both
in the technology and in the change
management hurdles. The European Commission are supporting
the new European DLM (Document Lifecycle Management)
Forum initiative, established this year and developing
a European Best Practice Information Management Framework
to cover the dual requirements of "access and preservation"
which will include the EC's widely acclaimed MoReq specification. The
DLM Forum 2002 in Barcelona identified vital areas of
Information Management practice which need to be addressed
and these will be described.

Data Protection and Freedom of Information
Elizabeth France
The Information Commissioner
The web has revolutionised the access, exchange and
use of electronic information. This access to trading
and personal information can easily give rise to the
accidental exploitation and abuses of rights and privacy.
The acts for Data Protection (DPA) and Freedom Of Information
(FOI) are two sides of this coin. Elizabeth explains
the key issues you need to understand your responsibilities
and avoid any costly accidents by you or your staff.

Long term archiving of e-information
David Ryan
UK PRO
Achieving effective control of e-information is the
first challenge, the next is to manage the long term
useful archiving of this e-information. It has many
issues in relationship to readability and preservation.
Records on paper and parchment are long lasting and
can generally be viewed without special equipment. Computer
records have much shorter lives and need a more active
preservation policy. A service for the long term preservation
of electronic records is being developed by the UK PRO.
David explores this next issue to face the archives
of e-information.

Doing away with the records management application?
Solomon Barron
IBM
As records management becomes a key requirement of
document management strategies, should the point solution
approach traditionally used for document management
implementations be discarded in favour of an enterprise
view of the problem? Must unsuspecting users continue
to face the prospect of deploying yet another application
or is there another way?

The use and value of information in the pursuit
of a 'just' regulation
Mike Frost
Manager - Intelligence and Records

regulation in one guise or another touches everyone.

regulation - Mike examines a pragmatic approach being
"regulation based on properly assessed risk" that takes
into account known circumstances.

Coordinating e-information assets internationally
Mike Marsh
AstraZeneca
The majority of businesses are reliant upon technology,
and AstraZeneca is no exception. Described as "information
rich", lots of effort is put into document, information
and knowledge management.Vitally, they have also recognised
the critical role that good "international" records
management will play in ensuring that they will always
be able to access and re-use key information, despite
national/systems boundaries and format obsolescence.
How have they achieved that? What can you learn from
them?
