The explosion of an organisation's information content,
fuelled by the internet, is requiring root and branch
re-assessment of its strategy for the management and
control of information assets.The challenges are both
in the technology and in the change management hurdles.
The European Commission are supporting the new European
DLM (Document Lifecycle Management) Forum initiative,
established this year and developing a European Best
Practice Information Management Framework to cover the
dual requirements of "access and preservation" which
will include the EC's widely acclaimed MoReq specification.The
DLM Forum 2002 in Barcelona identified vital areas of
Information Management practice which need to be addressed
and these will be described.

and personal information can give rise to exploitation
and abuses of rights and privacy. The acts for Data
Protection (DPA) and Freedom Of Information (FOI) are
two sides of this coin. Elizabeth explains the key issues
you need to understand to avoid any costly mistakes
by you or your staff.

Long term archiving of e-information

Achieving effective control of e-information is the
first challenge, the next is to manage the long term
useful archiving of this e-information. It has many
issues in relationship to readability and preservation.
Records on paper and parchment are long lasting and
can generally be viewed without special equipment. Computer
records have much shorter lives and need a more active
preservation policy. A service for the long term preservation
of electronic records is being developed by the UK PRO.
David explores this next issue to face the archives
of e-information.

ERDM in the DTI

The DTI is implementing an Electronic Document and
Records Management (ERDM) system as part of a new ways
of working programme. It will enable electronic sharing
and exploitation of DTI's business information and support
cross-cutting working. ERDM is being developed under
a public private partnership. It uses T2 e-records -
an integrated software selected from the PRO's list
of tested and approved systems. Following an 18 month
development programme the system started service trial
in December 2002.The presentation will cover the programme
development and lessons learned from the progress to
date.

Steve Wells is Departmental Record Officer of the Department
of Health. With a background in IT and public administration,
he has led work on electronic records in the Department
of Health since 1996.

duties to manage the information risks required under the
Combined Code affecting all major UK organisations.Whilst
senior management in the UK do place IT security high on their
agendas, they have not implemented appropriate controls with
less than 6% of all UK companies being compliant with BS7799.

most recent consultation paper.
