Independent research shows that whilst the vast majority of SME's already have websites, fewer than 10% have integrated these with core business applications and Benchmark Research suggest "companies are already being left behind by the majority". SME's recognise they lack the competitive edge that real-time integrated management information could provide. They also lack the in-house skills to design and deliver that integration and cannot afford the diversion of effort for large-scale implementation.

the future

The rate of business change and its unpredictability is increasing. Flexibility and scalability will be prime requirements and the burden on SME staff will therefore grow too, unless a solution can be found. Benchmark Research suggests "... one solution may be greater use of external project management resources either from the vendor or from an independent consultant."
