Friends, foes, facts and fiction - New World Commerce
Neil Ferguson
Director of Research
PMP

After a period of explosive technological advances what have we learned? The key questions are: Is 'future proofing' the IT infrastructure or new ways to be competitive the current priority? Where are organisations placing IT investment? Which areas have matured to commodity status and, of the emerging technologies, who are the winners and losers?
Neil Ferguson is Research Director of PMP and draws on the vast range of original research undertaken for PMP and its publications.

Integrating and Evolving Applications & Technologies for e-commerce
The Net Economy is a major force in the development of world markets. Companies across all sectors are moving in this direction. The start of a lasting change is just beginning in Europe. The move to electronic business will have a major impact on supply chain performance, procurement costs, relations with customers, and even the structure of entire industries. Companies and organisations are seeking to integrate and evolve applications and technologies to embrace e-commerce business solutions, and to ensure the overall security of the information assets. This session will explore how these changes affect the management and development of enterprise wide applications and pose the question: Insource or Outsource?

New World Enterprise Systems need not cost the earth
Expectations from implementing ERP systems were high, yet few companies claim massive business improvements or even significant return on investment. But the ERP backbone is the key foundation for New World Commerce, where closer and more flexible working relationships between customers, supply chains and employees are essential. ERP has become ERPII by reaching outside the organisation to include customers, suppliers and employees. This has created new demands on IT, yet significant business improvements can be supported by relatively low cost solutions. We identify the "Top Ten" favourites for rapid return on investment to support New World Commerce.

The digital economy
In the race to build Web sites, many ignored how to build sustainable companies, and lost sight of basic business fundamentals. Don't be fooled into thinking we can just evolve our businesses. We must completely transform them. In the high-speed digital economy, EDS is working with businesses to eliminate boundaries and collaborate in new ways, to establish trust and to continuously seek improvement. These are the new digital economy imperatives; they're essential in making businesses work; and we are all basing our future on them.
