1. DELOITTE CHOOSES EUROPEAN CONSULTING LEADER

Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu has named London-based Deloitte Consulting partner Eggie Kock as European leader of the consultancy organisation it is rebuilding (as exclusively revealed in last week's MCN Direct) after failing to separate its audit and consultancy activities.

In an email to partners, Deloitte Consulting chief executive Paul Robinson said it was important to get regional leadership in place, particularly in Europe where the consultancy has numerous practices across the territory.

Kock, a senior UK partner leading Deloitte Consulting's European consumer business industry practice, will take responsibility for directing consultancy operations across Europe. He will continue to be based in London and will report to Robinson, the recently appointed Deloitte Consulting chief who is tipped to become the global leader of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu's extended consultancy business.

With the global leader of the consultancy still to be confirmed, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu is also believed to be in the process of selecting regional leaders to take responsibility for business in Asia-Pacific and Latin America.

2. EDS WINS $350 MILLION BARCLAYS CONTRACT

Barclays has awarded a $350 million, seven-year desktop outsourcing contract to EDS - no doubt cheering the latter's investors, but casting a shadow over IBM. Barclays had been negotiating a single 'mega' outsourcing deal with IBM but scrapped this one-source plan in April.

The EDS contract covers 41,700 desktop seats with scope for expansion. EDS claims it is one of the largest ever desktop deals in the UK retail banking sector.

Barclays' David Postings commented: "We chose to partner with EDS because it has a proven track record in delivering large-scale desktop services deals. This agreement will help us achieve improved quality of services to our customers. It's important for us to capitalise on the expertise of partners like EDS to help us drive improvements in service quality and to support group strategy."

For EDS, the win reinforces its position as a leading provider of desktop services worldwide and should please investors as they wait for a strategy plan aimed at financial recovery to be delivered by EDS chairman and CEO Michael Jordan next week.

3. ILLNESS CAUSES HILARY CROPPER TO STEP DOWN AT XANSA

Hilary Cropper, chairman and former chief executive of Xansa, is to retire from the IT service provider's board for reasons of ill health.

Cropper, who has been receiving treatment for cancer over the past 18 months, plans to resign after the next company annual general meeting in September.

During the past year, she has handed over the chief executive's title to Alistair Cox and appointed Peter Gill as chief financial officer. She has also overseen a reorganisation of the Xansa group that created a leaner machine working in the selected markets of business and technology consulting, IT implementation, IT outsourcing and business process outsourcing.

Cox said: "We are all saddened that Hilary has had to stand down much earlier than we expected. Her passion and foresight have been a driving force behind the growth and success of Xansa. The company that Hilary joined bears little resemblance in scale or international reach to the company that we are today. What is equally impressive is the way she built the organisation while maintaining the core values and principles that make us unique."

While Cropper will no longer be a board member at Xansa, she will remain part of the company with the title of honorary president and the responsibility of continuing to promote and represent Xansa in external forums.

The search for a new chairman has begun and it is hoped that a chairman designate will be announced before the September AGM.

4. HEDRA HEADS FOR SCOTLAND

Public sector strategy consultancy Hedra is expanding into Scotland with Stephen Farrell, former head of consulting services at Cap Gemini Ernst & Young in Scotland and Ireland, leading the way.

Farrell's brief is to develop and implement Hedra's strategy in Scotland and Ireland, adding to the company's client list - which includes UK government departments and agencies, local and regional authorities, defence organisations and healthcare providers.

He believes that Hedra's "top-class services offered at extremely competitive rates" give the firm good potential for growth in Scotland, where it has opened offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Farrell's appointment follows the addition of ex-PricewaterhouseCoopers executive Andrew Hebb as Hedra's chief financial and operating officer (MCN Direct 2-20).

5. LIBERATA STRENGTHENS MANAGEMENT TEAM

UK business process outsourcing specialist Liberata has made internal promotions to its company and executive boards as it pursues its aim to become "the pre-eminent provider of BPO services in its chosen markets".

Nick Greatorex has been appointed chief financial officer and joins the board. He was previously chief development officer and will continue to carry development responsibilities as he moves to lead Liberata's central finance team and finance function.

Paul Fisher and Mark Holmes move up to the executive board. Previously business centre director for ICT services, Fisher has become joint managing director of corporate services for the ICT sector. Holmes, previously operations director of local government, is promoted to joint managing director of local government.

Liberata CEO Glenn Timms commented: "Dynamic talent is a key element of Liberata's DNA. These appointments clearly illustrate the wealth of such talent that we have to call on."
